Nazi Germany makes perfect sense now, and that understanding stings.
Today I am learning (and I wish this had surprised me, but I skipped straight to outrage and disgust) that many so-called “liberal” wealthy people, the ones who were giving big money to charities and causes supporting LBGTQIA+ people, economic justice, and other things that the average person in possession of an actual heart supports, have quietly stopped sending checks.
At this moment in history, when people in power are repeating the horrors of the 1850s, the 1900s, and the 1930s with a level of committed accuracy that says “I read Mein Kampf like an instruction manual,” people who call themselves “liberals” are just rolling over. Throwing up their hands. In some cases, actually switching sides and attempting to ingratiate themselves with the Nazis. And yeah, up until now we used to dismiss anyone who called another American a “Nazi” because it was hyperbolic. But then they started flying Nazi flags, throwing Nazi salutes, and preferring to talk to Nazis in other countries instead of meeting with their actual legitimate leaders.
America, we have a problem.
Because I don’t think this is as simple as “people don’t want to get caught donating to left-wing causes when the hammer comes down,” although I’m sure there are plenty of cowards in that boat. After all, Elon Musk is…
